STUDIO NOIRFIVE STAR DOCTRINE

STUDIO NOIR · The 5-Star Doctrine

The founding philosophy of member experience. Every decision, from a paint color to a class playlist, is filtered through this doctrine.

Applies at Phase 1 boutique scale and Phase 2 flagship scale equally. The standard does not shrink with the footprint.

The reference set

STUDIO NOIR is measured against hotels, not gyms.

Studied references: - Aman Tokyo (arrival stillness, sight-line control) - The Peninsula Chicago (concierge memory, F&B discretion) - Aman New York (member intimacy at scale) - Rosewood São Paulo (material warmth, low light) - The Ned London (members’ lounge choreography, Phase 2 relevant) - NoMad London (editorial hospitality) - The Class by Taryn Toomey (practice-as-ritual) - Remedy Place (recovery as social occasion, Phase 2) - Equinox Hotels (the halfway model, and what falls short — transactional not intimate)

Failure modes we study: F45 (transactional), Life Time Diamond (buffet), Barry’s (nightclub not club), SoulCycle post-Peloton (brand erosion).

The doctrine (10 principles)

1. The greeting is the product

First eight seconds set the arc. Greeter (Taj, Studio Manager, or a contract instructor Phase 1; concierge Phase 2) is standing, not seated. Uses the member’s first name. Offers the arrival drink (prosecco Phase 1; expanded menu Phase 2). Never checks in on a screen while the member stands.

2. Scent, sound, light, and temperature are the walls

Interior design is half the environment. The other half is sensory. STUDIO NOIR has: - One signature scent across the space - A curated playlist by Trill or an assigned in-house team, never streaming radio - Warm color-temperature lighting at 2700K in social areas, 3000K in the studio - Precise thermal zone in the studio (68-72°F)

3. Nothing that reads as gym

No molded plastic. No neon signage. No motivational quotes on walls. No countdown clocks. No “hustle” language. No sponsored energy drink coolers. No plastic dumbbells or plastic anything. Training equipment is the finest available. Vocabulary is club, not gym.

4. Members know each other’s names, and staff knows all of them

By month 3, every recurring touchpoint knows the member’s name and one detail (drink preference, class regularity, spouse’s name).

Phase 1: simpler system. Taj, Trill, Tia, Studio Manager, and 2-3 contract instructors know all ~60 members personally. This is manageable at boutique scale and a big brand advantage.

Phase 2: requires a member profile system (CRM) as the roster grows past 300.

5. Privacy is a feature, not an amenity

Phase 1: limited. Small boutique means members see each other. But we control the calendar so classes stay right-sized and members feel the room isn’t overcrowded.

Phase 2: Members can enter, train, recover, and leave without being seen by other members if they choose. Private studios exist. Private recovery cabanas exist. Departure through the members-only exit exists. Celebrity and athlete members expect this.

6. Every ritual has a reason

Prosecco is not a marketing gimmick. It signals the member has crossed a threshold from the outside world into a space that treats them as arrived. The eucalyptus towel at departure signals the practice is complete and the member is dressed to be seen again.

Every ritual serves one of: arrival, transition, practice, recovery, departure. If a ritual serves none, cut it.

7. Consumables are curated to hotel standard

  • Prosecco: Bisol Jeio (Prosecco DOCG), not commodity Italian sparkling
  • Elderflower spritz: house-made from St-Germain and mineral water
  • Espresso: Onyx Coffee or comparable (Phase 2)
  • Tea: Bellocq or Pekoe (Phase 2)
  • Water: still and sparkling, glass bottles

No processed protein bars. No commercial energy drinks. No brand-partnership beverages.

8. Music is dramaturgy, not background

Trill oversees a rotating playlist library organized by function.

Phase 1: - Arrival: contemplative, warm, low BPM - Class time: tuned per class by instructor within brand palette (no explicit lyrics in morning) - Post-class stretch: contemplative, allows conversation

Phase 2 adds: - Recovery wing: ambient, low-BPM, meditative - Lounge evenings: editorial dinner playlists (Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Sade, contemporary neo-soul)

Streaming services are banned. All music is licensed and curated.

9. Members’ time is sacred

Members do not stand in line. Ever. Booking is app-first (Mariana Tek) with staff override. Class transitions have zero member waiting. Café orders (Phase 2) are ready when the member arrives if pre-ordered.

Phase 1 standard: If a member ever waits more than 90 seconds for a booked service, it is a signal to fix something.

10. Consistency across time and staff

A member’s experience at 6 AM Tuesday must match their experience at 9 PM Saturday. A member’s experience with a contract instructor must match their experience with Taj.

Systematized hospitality is not less warm. It is more warm, because it never fails.

The tests we run

Every 90 days, one of these runs:

The mystery member test. A trained hospitality auditor (not staff, not local) books a full member journey and scores against the SOP. Any failure = corrective action within 30 days.

Phase 1: informal version — Taj asks a trusted friend to visit anonymously and report back.

The founder walkthrough. Taj does a member journey unannounced. Sits with 3 members afterward. Asks two questions: “What surprised you? What disappointed you?”

The competitive tour (Phase 2). GM or Director MX spends a day at Aman NY, Peninsula, Ned London, or NoMad. Reports back on one thing STUDIO NOIR is missing.

The staff blind survey. Anonymous survey of front-line staff: “What is embarrassing about our service that members don’t see?” The answers direct next quarter’s ops focus.

The line between hospitality and theater

Not everything luxury is warm. Some 5-star hotels are cold, distant, performative. That is not STUDIO NOIR.

STUDIO NOIR is warm. Staff have opinions on classes, favorite instructors, best recovery cadence. They know members by name. They laugh with them. They notice when someone is not there and text.

STUDIO NOIR is not: - Distant - Performative - Whispered - Overtly sculpted - Trying too hard

STUDIO NOIR is: - Precise - Familiar - Grounded - Confident - Effortless

Precise hospitality is the standard. Effortless is the surface. Warm is the underlayer.

What Phase 1 must NOT lose (even at small scale)

  • The greeting by name
  • Prosecco at the door
  • The signature scent
  • Curated music
  • No gym language in staff conversation
  • The member profile discipline (even a spreadsheet works Phase 1)
  • The end-of-class stretch space (informal replacement for a recovery wing)
  • The farewell that acknowledges completion

What Phase 1 waives (until Phase 2): - Full arrival lounge with seating clusters - Formal concierge desk staffed all day - Multi-modality recovery wing - Café and lounge programming - Private cabanas and private studios - VIP private egress - Departure attendant with chilled eucalyptus towel station - Valet service

Applied in the arrival ritual (01), journey map (02), hospitality SOPs (03), signature amenities (04), and departure ritual (05).
