STUDIO NOIR · PR Strategy
Phase 1: light-touch, local RDU press only. No PR firm, no press releases, no national pitch. Phase 2: full national + regional press campaign, PR retainer, tiered pitch strategy.
Phase 1 PR strategy
Guiding thesis
STUDIO NOIR Phase 1 does not need press to fill 60 members. Taj’s audience + Tia’s Nomad + word of mouth is enough. Chasing press in Phase 1 dilutes attention and spends money we don’t have on outcomes we don’t need.
The one exception: RDU-local press coverage confers a “Triangle insider” halo that helps waitlist growth and legitimizes the concept. That’s worth pursuing. Nothing beyond.
Phase 1 target press list (RDU-local only)
| Outlet | Beat | Story fit | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| WALTER Magazine | Raleigh luxury lifestyle | Founder + new business opening in Raleigh | 3-4 months |
| Raleigh Magazine | Lifestyle, women-owned biz | Founder profile of Taj | 4-6 weeks |
| RALtoday (6AM City) | Newsletter, high open rates | Blast on soft-open | 2-3 weeks |
| WRAL Lifestyle (TV) | TV broadcast, North Raleigh/Cary reach | Morning-show segment | 4-6 weeks |
| INDY Week | Alt-weekly, culture-first | Tastemaker cred | 4-6 weeks |
| Axios Raleigh | Politics + business tilt | Founder + market story | 3-4 weeks |
| Local RDU podcasts (lifestyle, entrepreneur, women in business) | Various | Interview with Taj | 2-4 weeks |
| Nomad Society press channels | Cross-brand | Announcement of STUDIO NOIR as sister venture | 2-4 weeks |
Target: 2-3 placements before Full Open (June 2027).
Phase 1 pitch approach
- Tia drafts the pitch (short, editorial, founder-first)
- Sent to individual editors/writers (not a blast to a press list)
- Follow-up once. If no response, move on. No third emails.
- If secured, provide full press kit: 3-5 photos of Taj, brand story (from 01_BRAND/01), fact sheet (address, opening date, membership tiers, size), 1-page bio for Taj
What Phase 1 does NOT do
- No PR firm retained
- No press release wire distribution
- No national pitches (Cultured, Departures, Vogue Business, WSJ Off Duty, etc. — all Phase 2)
- No influencer PR campaign
- No paid PR services
- No press event
Phase 1 owned-channel storytelling
Instead of chasing press, we tell the story through owned channels:
Taj’s IG (primary)
- Monthly buildout content
- Weekly stories from Taj
- One longer post per month on a milestone (LOI signed, lease signed, first pole rig installed, first Founder accepted, etc.)
Trill’s IG (secondary, occasional)
- Announcement posts when STUDIO NOIR crosses a milestone
- Behind-the-scenes moments (Trill visiting the studio during buildout)
STUDIO NOIR IG @studionoir (curated by Tia)
- Editorial content, monthly
- Photography-first (not stock, not stock-adjacent)
- Slow cadence (2-3 posts per week)
Nomad Society cross-brand
- Occasional mention on Nomad channels
- Cross-referral in email newsletters
Phase 1 crisis PR plan
Small business, so a crisis is unlikely. But if:
- Member injury lawsuit or public incident: Trill handles all comms, attorney reviews any statement before release. Never comment publicly on litigation. Never blame anyone.
- Social media negative wave: Tia + Trill draft a single public response only if warranted. Otherwise silence and address the underlying issue.
- Landlord dispute or lease crisis: private conversation, no public statement.
- Instructor misconduct: immediate contract termination if allegations are credible. No public statement without attorney review.
Handled internally Phase 1. No PR crisis firm on retainer.
Phase 2 PR strategy (preserved for reference)
Phase 2 flagship has four stories to tell, each landing in different rooms:
1. Founder story
Taj Hines built this. Story fit: Cultured, Departures, Vogue Business.
2. Category story
Luxury vertical wellness is a category being created. Story fit: Vogue Business, WSJ Off Duty, GQ, Business North Carolina.
3. IP story
THE NOIR INVITATIONAL is a traveling championship produced by TWG. Story fit: Hot 97, Complex, GQ.
4. Franchise story
Raleigh is the first city; Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami as Phase 3 franchise candidates. Story fit: WSJ, Bloomberg, Fast Company (once we have proof).
Phase 2 press list
Regional: WALTER Magazine, Raleigh Magazine, INDY Week, Axios Raleigh, WRAL Lifestyle, Business North Carolina, Southern Living, Garden and Gun.
National lifestyle: Cultured, Departures, Kinfolk, Cereal, T Magazine, Vogue Business.
National business: WSJ Off Duty, Bloomberg, Fast Company, Forbes.
Cultural: GQ, Complex, Vibe, The Fader, Hot 97 (Trill’s channel).
Wellness/fitness: Well+Good, MindBodyGreen, Athletech News, Poosh, Goop.
Phase 2 PR retainer
PR firm retained 6 months pre-open. Options: boutique lifestyle PR firms with hospitality experience (options TBD in 2028 selection process).
Phase 2 opening week press day
Full press day programmed as part of opening week (see 02_OPENING_WEEK). Concept: STUDIO NOIR INVITATIONAL announcement lands during press day. Team Hennessy activation happens the night before.
Full Phase 2 PR strategy rebuilt in 2028 alongside Phase 2 capital raise and marketing manager hire.
